If you think French Creek Mercantile only stocks antique and vintage items, think again.

This large store of wall-to-wall treasures in downtown Union City is also your one-stop shop for a wide variety of kitchenware and other durable housewares — including Pyrex dishes, coffeemakers, juicers, crockpots, utensils, baking pans, vintage Tupperware and glassware, and towels and linens — all at rock-bottom prices.

“We even beat the dollar stores,” said Mary Lou Rose, who manages the store. There’s even an area of the store stocked with antiques and finds from the building’s owner, Floyd Metzger — items perfect for decorating a man cave: metal beer and soda signs, weathered pallet wood, sports memorabilia, oil can collectibles and more.

Mary Lou places new items out daily, often sourced from estate buyouts. “And if I don’t have it, I can find it,” she said.

Many come in just to take a trip down memory lane. From beloved characters like Winnie the Pooh to iconic brands like Campbell’s to grandfather clocks, board games, utensil crocks and punchbowl sets, Rose said she often hears patrons wistfully exclaim, “My grandma had that!”

Those vacationing at Canadohta Lake from Pittsburgh (townies call them “Mup-Heres”) love to shop at French Creek Mercantile. Many items are gently used, while others have never been taken out of the box. One shopper found a beautiful pin to attach to her dress for her granddaughter’s wedding. “It was the perfect color to match her dress,” Mary Lou said. “She was so happy that it made me happy!”

Other standout items include a black stroller from the 1920s, afghan blankets and luggage of all kinds, as well as cabinets and dressers. You could be on the hunt for towel holders, bedsheets, vinyl records or comic books; come here first before going to the big-box stores. You can even buy the clock on the wall — if it’s in the store, it’s for sale.

French Creek Mercantile is open Tuesday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The store is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
